Rhum J.M sits at the foot of Mount Pelée in northern Martinique, and you can taste the volcanic terroir. Rich, intense, with a deeper cane character than southern distilleries. The VSOP ageing adds vanilla, tobacco, and a gorgeous oak complexity. Earthy, mineral, and magnificent.

The molasses and brown sugar sweetness is quite pronounced, even for a dark rum. I prefer something with more oak and spice to balance things out. It makes a decent Dark and Stormy where the ginger beer cuts through, but neat I find it cloying after a glass.

A real discovery from the Caribbean

I'd never tried anything from this distillery and I'm genuinely impressed. Pot-still character shines through — ripe plantain, beeswax, and a funky tropical note that's addictive. The palate has wonderful weight and a finish that goes on for days. Character and craft in every sip. Will be buying a case.

A blend that actually works

The concept of blending rums from Barbados, Jamaica, and Trinidad sounds like a marketing gimmick, but it genuinely delivers something special. You get Barbadian smoothness, Jamaican funk, and Trinidadian lightness all in one glass. The nose has banana and vanilla, the palate is clean but complex. Superb.

Mount Gay XO is undeniably well-crafted — smooth, balanced, with nice notes of caramel and dried fruit. But I find it a touch too restrained. I want my aged rum to have a bit more personality, a bit more oomph. It's polished almost to a fault.

There's good flavour here — molasses, coffee, tropical fruit — but the delivery is a bit harsh. The alcohol has a slight burn that detracts from the experience neat. It's best used as an ingredient rather than a sipping rum. Fine in cocktails and cooking but not for enjoying on its own.

Exceptional aged sipping rum

Rich amber colour and a nose that fills the room — vanilla, coconut, and toasted oak. On the palate it's smooth and weighty with flavours of toffee, ripe mango, and a beautiful cinnamon warmth on the finish. You can taste every year in the barrel. One of the best bottles I've opened this year.

Don Q Oak Barrel is well-made but doesn't stand out in a crowded spiced rum market. The vanilla and cinnamon are pleasant, the oak influence adds some depth, but there's nothing that makes me reach for it over Chairman's Reserve Spiced or even Sailor Jerry.

Yes, it's funky and fruity and intensely powerful. But at 63% the alcohol heat can overwhelm the more subtle flavours. I prefer it in a Rum Punch where the fruit juice and ice tame the beast. Neat, it's a bit of an ordeal unless you're experienced.

Perfection from Barbados

I've been drinking rum for twenty years and Mount Gay XO remains one of the finest I've ever tasted. The blend of aged marques creates something that's greater than the sum of its parts — vanilla, caramel, butterscotch, banana, leather, oak, coconut — all in perfect harmony. The long, warming finish is pure joy.

If you're expecting the sweetness of traditional rum, Cœur de Canne will be a shock. It's grassy, vegetal, almost savoury — closer to a blanco tequila than a Bacardi. But give it time and the fresh cane character reveals genuine beauty. Best in a Ti' Punch with cane syrup and lime.

When you're making rum and cokes for twenty people, this is what you want. Clean, light, inoffensive, and affordable. The subtle vanilla and almond notes play well with mixers. Not everything needs to be a sipping rum — sometimes you just need something reliable.

Punches well above its price

I've done blind tastings with white rums at twice the price and Havana Club 3 always holds its own. The brief barrel ageing gives it a complexity that purely unaged rums just can't match. Soft vanilla, a whisper of oak, clean sugarcane sweetness. Brilliant value.
